of lymph node metastases, which may have affected results. Certainly these results have not been demonstrated by other investigators that have found no statistically significant difference between squamous differentiation and pure TCC, although many have shown mortality reductions with other subtypes such as adenocarinoma, carcinosarcoma and small cell carcinoma of the bladder (1-3). Nonetheless, it remains crucial that further, preferably randomized or well conducted retrospective studies are performed, to confirm which TCC subtypes truly portend a poorer prognosis. This data could then be used to assist in the integration of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, together with surgery in the management of these aggressive cancers in order to improve clinical outcomes. The role of squamous differentiation in patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder treated with radical cystectomy.

OBJECTIVE We aim at determining the prognostic value of squamous differentiation in patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder that were treated with radical cystectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 1993 to January 2005, we retrospectively selected 113 patients. Correlations among squamous differentiation with other clinical and pathological features were assessed by...

Cytokeratin 20 in Transitional Cell Carcinoma of Bladder and Its Relation with Prognostic Factors

Background and Aims: Immunohistochemical tests are one of the most important tests, which are under study to determine the prognosis of the cancers such as transitional cell carcinoma. By the time, flexible cystoscopy and urine cytology are the routine tests for following up the patients with transitional cell carcinoma, which are both operator dependent. On the other hand, cystoscopy is an inv...

Squamous differentiation in pT1 bladder urothelial carcinoma predicts poor response for intravesical chemotherapy

The role of squamous differentiation in pT1 bladder tumors in the response to intravesical chemotherapy was unknown. We performed a retrospective analysis of 213 pT1 bladder urothelial carcinoma patients with squamous differentiation (group1), the remaining 213 pT1 pure urothelial carcinoma served as controls (group2). All cases were treated with transurethral resection of bladder tumor and sub...

Comparative study of conventional urothelial carcinoma, squamous differentiation carcinoma and pure squamous carcinoma in patients with invasive bladder tumors

PURPOSE Treatment results evaluation (radical cystectomy and adjuvant chemo/radiotherapy) in patients with urothelial carcinoma, squamous differentiation carcinoma and pure squamous bladder carcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 361 patients with invasive bladder carcinoma treated between 1990-2013. Histology showed 296 cases of urothelial carcinoma (82% - group A), 52 cases of ur...

High-Grade Urothelial Carcinoma of Bladder Transforming to Micropapillary Variant on Follow-Up

Micropapillary variant of urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the bladder is an aggressive tumour, comprising 0.6-6% of all UC. It generally presents with high-grade and stage, and has been reported as having a worse prognosis when compared to traditional UC. We report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with macroscopic haematuria. The patient was diagnosed with high-grade urothelial carcinom...
